About
The steak sandwich is a Japanese-inspired dish. It was originally a simple on-the-go menu that could be easily picked up from the supermarket. In recent years, some have developed this simple menu into an elegant menu that is served in fancy restaurants by replacing the simple beef with a high-grade
Ingredient
Procedure
- 1) We will begin by preparing the sauce of the sandwich. Using a saucepan, put finely chopped garlic and diced onion into the pan with medium heat until they are cooked. After the garlic and onion are cooked, we put soy sauce, Japanese sake or other aromatic alcohol, ketchup, honey, and mustard all in the saucepan. Mix everything well until you observe the sauce start to boil. If the sauce is too thick or too light, you can adjust the thickness by adding or leaving on the heat until it reaches the thickness you like. I suggest the same thickness as the honey should be the best.
- 2) Then, we will move on the prepare the bread. The general purpose of this step is to make the bread crust crispy. If you own a toaster, you can simply use the toaster to toast the bread to your liking. Then, after the bread has been toasted, gently spread a thin layer of butter on the inner side of the bread. If you don't have access to the toaster, you can use a flat pan to toast the bread instead, and don't forget to spread some butter on it after it has been toasted until it is crispy.
- 3) To prepare the steak, lightly season both sides of the steak piece with salt and pepper. We don't want to over-season the steak here since we have already prepared the sauce to go with it. I would recommend you invest in a good quality piece of steak since it would make the most different impression on our menu. You don't have to go over and beyond here but try to find a steak cut with high fat content that is as thick as your bread since it would make the texture of our sandwich perfect for a bite.
- 4) In this step, we will prepare the coating layers for our steak cut. First, pour the all-purpose flour and the breadcrumb on two separate flat plates. Also, crack the egg in a somewhat flat container and beat it until the yolk mixes well with the white. Then, in the exact order, thinly coat your steak with the flour evenly on all surfaces of the piece; put the thinly covered into the egg container and coat it with another layer of egg mixture; finally, coat the steak well with the breadcrumb. After all of the layers have been applied, give the steak a firm press so that everything sticks together on our steak.
- 5) In the meantime, you can prepare the deep-fried station that we will use for our steak. Using a deep pan/pot, pour roughly 2 cups of oil (enough to submerge your steak) into the pan and set it to medium-high heat. It is okay for our steak to be medium rare since we want to be able to bite through the steak. Then, you can drop the steak that has been covered in layers from the previous step into the oil. Once you see the breadcrumb golden yellow, our steak is ready. The breadcrumb will continue to get slightly browner even after we takes it off the oil. Note that, this step should only take a few minutes to complete
- 6) The final step is to put everything together! Begin with bread and spread a light coat of our sauce on the deep-fried steak. Finally, assemble another piece of the bread to have our steak sandwich ready to serve.
